DIY Wedding Decorations Ideas

If you are a budget bride with a knack for crafts, DIY wedding decorations are a great way to save money while personalizing your wedding.

Making wedding decorations opens up the decor options for your ceremony and reception as you are not limited by only being able to choose from the wedding decor options in your price range.

However, as with all do it yourself wedding decoration projects, you need to be willing to spend more time towards making the decorations which will include time to get all the necessary components as well as making numerous trial runs.

Natural Inspiration

Painted garden urns filled with plants or flowers make perfect DIY wedding decorations for a spring weddingBorrow, rent or purchase cement or terracotta decorative garden urns and pots to use as reception centerpiece decorations, as well as decor for the buffet, side tables and the entry to the wedding reception venue.

Choose lower profile urns or pots for table centerpieces and taller urns for buffets and other decor.

Spray paint, sponge paint or age the pots and fill them with moss, vines like ivy, flowers or grasses for a modern look.

Another natural option is to collect dried tree branches, stain or paint them and place them in tall glass vases.

Fill the vase with river rocks or citrus fruit (sliced and whole). Or place the vase on a centerpiece mirror, drape it with crystal garland and surround it with votive candles. For tall decorations, be sure to double weight the vase (weight it twice the weight of the branches).

Paper flowers are perfect DIY wedding decorations for a vintage weddingPaper Projects

For a day wedding, a vintage wedding or a more casual at home wedding, hanging paper pom poms are great DIY wedding decorations.

Print out one of the many patterns available online, purchase bulk tissue paper in your wedding colors and cut them out yourself, or save some time and buy pre-cut paper pom poms.

Crepe paper flowers can be quite charming and more sophisticated in their design than you may think, but they are very time consuming to make so start early. You can purchase kits or find templates online.

Paper banners are also great DIY wedding decorations. You can cut intricate designs in paper and attach them to string, or keep it simple and fold diamond shaped pieces of paper in your wedding colors over string and glue to make triangle banners.

See tissue paper, paper pom poms, decorative paper, paper garlands and DIY wedding crafts books on Amazon.com.

Fresh Flowers

making wedding decorations can be easy when you choose a simple flower and candle centerpieceFrom the simplicity of fresh flower stems in a grouping of dollar store vases in the center of the table to leaf wrapped containers of mixed flowers, making your own flower decorations is now more economical than ever.

With online bulk flower sellers catering to weddings (fiftyflowers.com. is great for bulk wedding flowers) and discount stores like Costco and dollar item stores stocking wedding supplies, you can save a fortune on floral decorations for your wedding.

However, you cannot really prepare them beforehand, leaving you with a lot of work to do on the day of the wedding.

There is also the issue of where to store the fresh flowers before the wedding (they will need to be in a cool place).

The trick to DIY flowers is to keep it simple. A glass vase filled with one flower variety will look beautiful and be much less stressful than a complicated arrangement.

See bulk floating candles, submersible vase tea lights, clear vase filler and flower arranging books on Amazon.com.

For a modern look, submerge a stem of flowers in a cylindrical glass vase filled with water and add a floating candle or a submersible tea light and filler.

Prepare the arrangements first thing in the morning on your wedding day and enlist help. If transportation the finished arrangements is an issue, see if you can take the flowers and supplies to the venue and make the arrangements there.

DIY wedding decorations can be big money savers, but it will take a lot of extra time and careful planning to be a less stressful decor option as well.
