Tips for Making a Bridal Bouquet:
Fresh Flower DIY Wedding Bouquets

Making a bridal bouquet with fresh flowers for your own wedding is a great way to save some money, as well as introducing a personal touch.

Fresh flower DIY wedding bouquets allow you to pick your favorite flowers or experiment with nontraditional flower varieties that will match your wedding color scheme.

As with all DIY wedding projects, give yourself plenty of time ahead of the wedding day to practice making your wedding flowers as it can take a long time to get exactly the right look.

Where to Buy Your DIY Wedding Flowers

Before you start to think about making a bridal bouquet you’ll need to think carefully about where to get your fresh flowers.

You have four main options of flower sources, each with their pros and cons:

Follow these tips for making a bridal bouquet and DIY wedding flowers
  • Professional florist – you’ll definitely be able to find all the flowers you’ll need for any DIY bridal bouquets at a wedding florist. However, you’ll pay a premium for out of season flowers as well as the florist’s expertise.
  • Bulk flowers online – buying your wedding flowers online can save money and you’ll also be able to access a wider range of fresh flowers. However, you won’t be able to touch or smell the flowers in person.
  • Grocery stores – most grocery stores now carry bunches of flowers which should work out much cheaper than a florist. However, you will be limited on the number you can buy and the varieties that the store will be able to order.
  • The garden – making a bridal bouquet from natural flowers from your garden will look great and of course comes completely free. However, you’ll be stuck with whatever flowers you can grow.

What You’ll Need

Having the right resources will help with your project, and you can get most of the following at either an arts store or your local florists:

  • Floral shears – these are sharper than regular scissors and designed specifically to accurately trim stems
  • Floral tape – this comes with tacky parts to be self adhesive to hold individual flowers together
  • Bouquet pins – these are delicate enough to hold fresh flowers together without ripping
  • Bouquet wrap – this to hold all the stems in place so try to match the color of the ribbon or fabric to your color scheme

DIY Wedding Bouquets Step By Step

Once you choose your bridal bouquet design, making a bridal bouquet should be fairly easy if you stick to a simple process:

Before you take on diy wedding bouquets, read these diy wedding flower tips1. Trim your stems so that you remove any thorns and that all of your flowers are roughly the same length. It will help to buy varieties of flowers that are the same sort of height in the first place.

2. Choose a few flowers to be the center of your bouquet. These should be the ones that best match your color scheme, or the ones with the brightest colors.

Attach them using the floral tape so two inches of stem and petals are visible.

3. Add the rest of the flowers and filler working outwards from this base. You can add them randomly or try to create a pattern. Add each flower with tape and bouquet pins to hold it in place.

4. Your final DIY fresh flower bridal bouquet should be around 14 inches in diameter and should have a round head of petals and filler.

Making a bridal bouquet look professional is easy. Wrap the fresh flower stems with floral tape and then cover with satin ribbon or a bouquet wrap. Start at the top and slowly wind the wrap up to the top and secure with bouquet pins.
