Wedding Announcement Wording Samples & Etiquette

The wedding announcement wording samples below will help you get a visual of what the text on your wedding announcements may look like.

Wedding Announcement Etiquette

The wedding announcement informs friends and family not invited to the wedding that the wedding took place.

If you are having a very small wedding, or a private ceremony with just you, your fiancé, witnesses, and a justice of the peace (or Elvis if you run off to Vegas), then you may want to send out wedding announcements.

Traditionally, wedding announcements are sent out by the parents of the bride, or the couple themselves.

Wording for Wedding Announcement -- What You Need to Know

Wedding announcements have similar wording to a wedding invitation (including the spelling out of dates), but with just the date, including the year, and the location of the ceremony -- not time or physical addresses.

It sounds simple, but it always helps to see examples, doesn't it?

Wedding Announcement Wording Samples

Here is an example of the wording for a wedding announcement sent out by the bride's parents:

Mr. and Mrs. Michael Lee Smith
announce the marriage of their daughter
Lisa Anne Smith
to
Mr. Richard Evan Jones
on Saturday the tenth of October
Two thousand and fourteen
Washington, DC

Here is an example of an announcement sent out by the bride and groom:

Miss Lisa Anne Smith
and
Mr. Richard Evan Jones
announce their marriage
on Saturday the tenth of October
Two thousand and fourteen
Washington, DC

If you have families with complicated divorces and remarriages anb you are not issuing the announcements yourselves, then follow the same wording for the issuers as you did for the wedding invitations.

When do you send out wedding announcements?

Some people get “save the date” cards and wedding announcements confused and send out wedding announcements when they should be sending out “save the date” cards. Don’t make this mistake.

So when do you send out wedding announcements? Traditionally, the wedding announcements are mailed out the next working day after the wedding.
