Do You Really Need Wedding Insurance as Part of Your Wedding Plan?

Wedding insurance covers you should an accident occur and you are found at fault. This could mean a vendor that you hired who does damage to a facility, or a guest who drinks too much and then causes damages or injury.

Some wedding venues require insurance.

Wedding insurance will also protect you from loss if you plan your wedding during hurricane season in the Southeast, forest fire season in the West, floods and tornadoes in the Midwest, or from freak snowstorms in the North.

Don’t risk losing all your wedding vendor deposits to unforeseen disasters.

Don’t think a backyard wedding is less risky.

The at home wedding especially needs to have liability insurance. Remember -- if you are having a home wedding and are serving alcohol, you are responsible for every person who is getting behind the wheel of a car later that evening.

Should there be an accident, you are liable, and most home owners policies will not cover this.

The insurance also covers:

  • If one or both of you get sick or injured just before the wedding and it needs to be postponed
  • If a vendor is a no-show
  • If a vendor goes out of business
  • Theft or damage of wedding gifts
  • A postponement of the wedding for active duty military called away

You can even get covered for “cold feet.” A friend of mine’s fiancé cancelled the wedding two weeks before the date. It was a big wedding and her parents lost serious money. It happens.

Whoever is signing the vendor contracts (sometimes it’s a parent) should take out the coverage because that is the person who is liable.

There are special insurance companies that deal strictly with this type of insurance and it can generally be purchased as little as 24 hours prior to the event.

The National Alliance of Special Event Planners offers comprehensive wedding insurance, as does Wedsafe and Protect My Wedding.

Prices for coverage start at around $150.

All wedding vendors should also carry their own liability insurance. Never assume somebody is legit - save yourself from wedding day crisis and financial ruin by ensuring they have liability insurance.
